Google Business Profile: The Free Tool 80% of Canadian Small Businesses Underuse

Google Business Profile is the most powerful free marketing tool available to local businesses. Here's how to set it up for maximum visibility in your Canadian city.

Why Google Business Profile Is Your Most Important Free Asset

When a Canadian consumer searches "restaurant near me" or "plumber in Brampton," the map results (Local Pack) that appear above organic search results account for approximately 44% of all clicks. Your Google Business Profile controls whether you appear there — and if so, how prominently. Every local business should treat GBP optimization with the same urgency as their website.

    Setting Up Your Profile Correctly

Visit business.google.com and claim or create your listing. The verification process for Canadian businesses typically takes 5–7 business days via postcard. Once verified:

    • Business name: Use your exact legal/trading name — no keyword stuffing (Google penalizes this)
    • Category: Choose the most specific primary category available. Add up to 9 secondary categories.
    • Address: Use the same format as Canada Post. Include suite numbers if applicable.
    • Service area: If you serve customers beyond your address, list every city/region you serve.
    • Hours: Be precise. Set special hours for holidays. Wrong hours = lost customers and negative reviews.
    • Phone: Use a local number with your area code — this reinforces local relevance.
    • Website: Link to a landing page optimized for your specific city/service, not just your homepage.

Writing a GBP Description That Converts

You have 750 characters. Use them wisely. Lead with your primary service and city: "Toronto's premier Italian restaurant, serving authentic Neapolitan pizza in the heart of Leslieville since 2018." Include your main keywords naturally. Mention what makes you different. End with a soft CTA: "Visit us Tuesday through Sunday, or order online for pickup."

    Photos: The Overlooked Ranking Factor

Google's own data shows that businesses with photos receive 42% more requests for directions and 35% more website clicks. Upload:

    • Exterior photo (front of building in daylight — helps customers recognize you)
    • Interior (atmosphere matters enormously in hospitality)
    • Products or services in action
    • Team photos (humanizes the business)
    • 360° photos if applicable

Add 2–3 new photos monthly. Fresh media signals an active business.

Getting More Reviews (The Right Way)

Paying for reviews is against Google's terms and results in penalties. The right strategy is systematic solicitation of genuine reviews from satisfied customers. Create a short link to your GBP review page (findable in your GBP dashboard under "Get more reviews"). Put it on receipts, follow-up emails, your website, and review cards at point of sale.

Respond to every review — positive and negative. For negative reviews, acknowledge the issue professionally and offer to resolve offline. Google rewards engagement, and potential customers read how businesses respond to criticism.

Google Posts: The Feature Nobody Uses

Google Posts appear directly on your GBP listing and in search results. You can post updates, offers, events, and products. Each post lasts 7 days (offers can be longer). Businesses that post regularly signal activity to Google's algorithm. Post at least twice weekly: a special offer, a behind-the-scenes update, a customer spotlight, or a seasonal promotion.

    Tracking What's Working

GBP's Insights dashboard shows search queries that triggered your listing, how many people clicked to your website, requested directions, or called you. Review these monthly. If you're getting impressions but few clicks, your photos or reviews need work. If you're barely getting impressions, your category selection or NAP consistency needs attention.
